Screen Printing DIY

A lot of people reach out to us either through random emails or conversations at shows around town asking about how we taught ourselves how to screen print. To be honest, it’s a pretty long story. I’ve thought about laying it all out and doing a 3 or 4 part series on the basics of getting yourself started with screen printing at your house, mainly because the free resources that are out there are pretty scarce. And even when you do find something useful, it usually just scratches the surface.

Turns out, there’s a pretty awesome graphic novel called Do-It-Yourself Screenprinting by John Isaacson that does a great job walking you through everything. I picked it up the other a couple years back at Lucy Parson’s Center. It’s all hand-drawn comic panels, and it walks you through everything from washing out screens in your shower (yikes) to printing on a 6-color press and working in a real shop. It’s half “how-to” and half “story of how I learned to screen print.”

Very well done, and available on the interweb.
